Game 46: Rays vs Boston Red Sox — Pregame News and Notes After an off day on Monday, the Rays begin a six-game home stand on Tuesday against all AL East opponents in advance of another three-city road trip. Tampa Bay (22–23) will take on Boston, and then Baltimore after a 7–4 stretch away from home.
Jake Faria (3–2 5.20) will start for the Rays as they look to climb back to .500 this evening. Faria was lifted after 4.1 innings in his last outing at Kansas City after allowing four walks and a hit batter in a 5–3 Tampa Bay victory.
Faria has been far better at Tropicana Field than at home, as he’s posted a 1.74 ERA in four starts in St Petersburg, and 8.14 in the five road outings. In his first two starts, Faria faced Boston and gave up one run in four innings in one start at Tropicana Field, and eight in 1.2 innings at Fenway.
The Red Sox (32–15) will start ace Chris Sale (4–1 2.29 ERA), who gave up two runs in five innings his last outing against Oakland. Sale has yet to allow more than three runs in a start this year, and he threw shutout ball over six innings against Tampa Bay on Opening Day.
I love the under tonight. Faria’s struggles this season concern me, especially when you consider how potent Boston’s offense can be when its firing on all cylinders. But we have some margin for error tonight because I doubt a weak-hitting Tampa Bay offense will sniff Sale. The under has cashed in five of the last six meetings between these two teams in Tampa and I see that trend holding true tonight.
